All the Hauls

The Quick Haul Long has landed.

Tern’s latest e-cargo bike is here in time for test ride season.

Earlier this month, industry veteran and e-cargo bike expert Arleigh Greenwald called Tern’s new Quick Haul Long “the best-priced midtail cargo bike that can truly hold 2 child seats, the reliable Bosch eBike system with 85Nm of torque, and great accessories.”

I’ve been eagerly waiting for Tern to bring this bike to market since I heard rumblings of its development last year, before I even signed on as a Tern dealer.  Last week I rolled our own sparkly (actually matte) QHL demo onto the floor.  So exciting to have people test riding this bike and dipping a toe into the waters of fully-loaded family biking and e-cargo hauling!

If you’re cargo bike curious, do yourself a favor and check out Arleigh’s blog and deep informational resource, Cargo Bike Life.  Her review of the Quick Haul Long is here, and a video version of the same is on her YouTube channel.

What’s the deal and what’s the difference?

If you count to three, that’s the number of different bikes in Tern’s catalog with the “Haul” moniker. We’ve had the other two since opening: the Short Haul and the Quick Haul [Non-Long].

The Short Haul is an acoustic, short-tail cargo bike that looks a lottttt like the Quick Haul [Original Recipe], which is an e-cargo bike with the same general form and the same eligible accessories. They’re like cousin bikes.

A mid-tail bike extends farther behind the driver seat than a short-tail.

More to the point, the Quick Haul has room for one kiddo passenger, whereas the Quick Haul Long has room for two.  As this also means a higher capacity in terms of structural strength, the QHL boasts the unique ability to carry a full-grown adult on its rear rack, when equipped with the right accessories.

Quick Haul Long is a big deal because it delivers the full-scale cargo benefits of Tern’s flagship cargo bike, the GSD, in a more affordable package–about $1,200 cheaper than the GSD S10 LX, the most popular version of that bike.

What are these bikes for?

The Quick Haul is your ace-in-the-hole for replacing car trips to work, for palling around with your young attaché, or for adventures with your furry friend–up to a 30-pound doggo on-bike via the Doghouse Mini, or a bigger buddy with the Burley Tail Wagon.

The Quick Haul Long is here to get you onboard the leave-the-car-at-home, leave-the-bike-trailer-at-home vehicular biking paradigm.  Bring your bestie, or bring two young wily passengers, or load up a full cart of Costco goods and take it across town, and don’t break a sweat doing so.

And yes, both of these bikes can easily take a trailer for even greater carrying capacity.

Look,

Winter is coming, but it’s not here yet.  We’re going to have a great time together talking about the best winter cycling hats, philosophizing around the fire about how many gears you really need, regaling each other with tales of touring the Driftless by Vektron, but it’s NOT. WINTER. YET. Which means you should come on down and ride one or ALL of the ‘Hauls at your local Cool Bikes North.

If you’re interested in test riding any of these bikes, drop us a line ahead of time and we’ll get it set up with the right accessories for you and any passengers you might be bringing along.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you around!
