Winter Deals for Spooky Temperatures
No angel
Pictured above is my favorite bike. It’s a reasonably long story, and there should probably be a separate email dedicated to the roads we’ve gone down together. For now though, suffice it to say this thing was ridden hard, hung up wet through many a Madison winter, and the bottom bracket is currently seized in the frame. I found this out because I went to remove it to address the fact that the seatpost is also stuck where it is.
These things happen when a moisture barrier (read: GREASE) isn’t applied during installation, or more commonly, when that moisture barrier washes away over time and isn’t replenished. This is a cardinal sin.
IMAGINE MY SHAME. A bicycle mechanic has allowed his fav ride’s bottom bracket and seatpost to become seized in the frame. No matter: there will be a remedy. And I’ll see to it that you know about it.
More importantly though, I won’t let this happen to you. That is, if you bring me your bike for a well deserved pre-winter treatment.
How’s about a free winterization consultation?
If you’re considering riding through winter—or know that you will—we’d love to be your resource for information as well as service. Maybe you’re a seasoned winter stalwart and want to come jam out about how fun it is; maybe you’re looking at trying to push past the shoulder season a little bit farther than you did last year, or get your first winter under your belt.
From shift cable treatments to winter tires and fenders, there are lots of ways to support winter biking, and we’re happy to offer our thoughts on it, and provide parts and service as applicable.
Speaking of tires…
We’re doing a winter tire preorder for Schwalbe studded winter tires, and Continental non-studded winter tires. If this is an investment you’ve been waiting to make, now would be a good time—seasonally, and also because we’re offering 10% off MSRP for preorders. Get at us with your needs and questions! Preorder will close November 1.
End-of-season bike sales
As the seasonal change rolls on, a few of our bikes are currently on sale:
Tern Vektron S10 demo bike - $300 off MSRP
Tern’s folding e-bike is a vagabond incarnate, ready to travel with you in trains, in the trunk of your car, and then carry you over hill and dale to your heart’s content. Arguably the best folding e-bike on the market for its powerful Bosch system, easy fold, and robust, third-party-tested frame design. Our demo is the now sold-out black/bronze color, so when it’s gone we will not see any more in this flavor. And it’s only got like twenty miles on it!
Vvolt Alpha II - $400 markdown
Portland-based Vvolt has a small but innovative catalog, and we have the small/medium build of their minimalist Alpha II. This single speed e-bike features a Gates carbon belt drive instead of a chain, has a throttle switch for on-demand motor power, and offers five modes of pedal assist. This is the lightest-weight e-bike on our floor, and even before the brand put this model on sale, it was the lowest priced of all our e-bikes. I can say it’s the best ride feel I’ve experienced on a bike with a hub motor.
Tern Node demo - $100 off MSRP
You might remember Tern’s larger wheel folding bike from last month’s email. This bike is simple and sweet, with a seven speed internal gear hub and a dynamo-powered front light that you’ll never have to remember to charge. These are out of stock domestically, with a December ETA…but this one could be yours for a nice price.
Special mention: Tern Link B8 Price reduction
Earlier this year the entry level Link got a hundred-dollar markdown to land at its current price of $399. This would be a fetching price for any bike-shop quality bike, let alone one that folds up to tuck into your closet or under your desk when not in use. We have the hard-to-get Midnight Blue colorway in stock
